- STEERING & TRACK BAR SYSTEMS -

Here are just a few details and specifications of the dedicated and time-tested tubing we include in every steering system we sell. Maximum durability and reliability is top priority in everything we do, as it shows here!

Our 1.125" diameter .220" wall DOM (Drawn Over Mandrel) The Stress Relieved SuperTuffDOM®520 Alloy Steel tubing insures uniform thickness and strength throughout the piece, which is nearly three times that of the OEM tie rods. The 1-piece tubes are machined using integral  right and left hand threaded ends, with milled flats for easy on-the-vehicle adjustments. The exterior surface is finished with a Hard Finish Metallic Titanium Powder Coat coating.

The tubing we include in our Standard system is specifically selected for it's unique ability to absorb direct hits and flex up to 4 inches while returning back to it's original position. To achieve this all of our tubes are ground  and polished to remove all significant metallurgical surface defects and stress points. Other more rigid compositions would place incredible stress on the much weaker knuckles, while resulting in a permanently bent tube. Even so, we do offer incredibly stronger tubing options for those that absolutely, positively have to have the ultimate in Tie-Rod strength. However, use this new found strength sparingly, as it is now the strongest part of your entire steering system and entire truck!

Our fully machined 1-piece tubing is much stronger than a hollow split style adjuster sleeve coupling two tie rods together like OEM designs, where it would be first to bend upon impact.

Information taken from Ryerson Industries, Chicago, IL. - Testing taken from ATT Corporation
(1)  Cross section of the actual material face, subtracting the inner diameter from the outer diameter's area
(2)  Welded ends reduce strength and increase stress risers while threaded ends eliminate weld failure
(3)  Flats milled for adjustemnt with a wrench rather than unreliable welded nuts which reduce tubing strength
(4)  Tested with a 50" tie rod length bar and measured in the center with a bend-test fixture
(5)  Larger diameter Tie Rod Tubing may interfere with with differential cover clearance at full turn on 4wd vehicles

TUBING MATERIAL INFORMATION

TuffDOM-520: "Out Toughs" SAE 1026 in test after test- TuffDOM-520's high strength and improved toughness make it the perfect match the most difficult mechanical applications like steering. To prove it, a comprehensive study was undertaken to compare the characteristics of TuffDOM-520 to those of the current industry standard SAE 1026. Mechanical property, notch toughness, and fracture toughness tests were performed on tubes manufactured under identical production conditions.

The result: TuffDOM-520 exhibited superior toughness when compared to SAE 1026. The toughness of TuffDOM 520 is greater than TuffDOM 620 and vastly greater than SAE 1026 with the same tensile properties.

Ductile-to-Brittle transition curves were also developed for all three grades. TuffDOM 520 clearly exhibited superior transition characteristics compared to SAE 1026.

The changes in hardness across the profile are a good indication of the changes in tensile strength across the same profile. TuffDOM-520 exhibited the a significantly higher and more uniform hardness across the entire profile while SAE 1026 revealed the lowest hardness level and the greatest variation.  -(copperweld)

Fracture Toughness Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) tests were performed according to ASTM E-1290 to compare the relative fracture toughness. (The greater the crack tip displacement, the tougher the material.) TuffDOM®-520 exhibited superior fracture toughness compared to SAE 1026.  -(copperweld)

The stringent manufacturing process of TuffDOM®-520 results on an extremely straight, uniform and ultra-high quality length of tubing which can be perfectly machined in your Bullet Proof Steering System™
